HUNT DETAILS:
This is a backpack Dall sheep hunt in the Alaska Range, and it is as demanding as sheep hunting gets. The country is high and broken, with sheer cliffs and loose rock that shifts without warning, and rockslides are a real consideration rather than a talking point. Hunters start with packs weighing fifty to sixty pounds and should count on carrying considerably more coming out if a ram is down. That reality sets the bar for who should book this hunt, and only hunters in strong physical condition will get what they came for. The hunting itself is done on foot, moving between camps and glassing for rams from vantage points until one is located and a stalk can be worked out. What comes back is worth the price of admission. Rams here run from thirty-four to forty-five inches, and the outfitter's success rate on this hunt is close to perfect. For hunters who want one of the wildest pursuits in North America, this is it.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Accommodations are as basic as they come. Hunters live out of small spike camps built from two-man tents, carrying in everything they will use on their backs. There is no running water and no electricity. Meals are freeze-dried and cooked on a small fuel stove, and drinking and cooking water comes straight from cold glacial runoff. Nothing about the setup is designed for comfort, because every ounce carried has to earn its place. Hunters who book this need to be at peace with sleeping on the ground, eating simply, and going without the ordinary conveniences for the length of the hunt. The tradeoff is being camped in wild country.
