ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter operates in southwest Iowa and guides for whitetail and turkey. The priority stated up front is giving each hunter the experience they came for, and the operation is honest that an Iowa tag is hard and expensive to come by, which raises the stakes on choosing the right outfitter. Hunters are put on fresh, highly managed ground that carries minimal pressure, which is the single biggest factor in encountering a mature buck. Nothing is guaranteed, and they do not pretend otherwise, but the scouting done before and during the season builds a real opportunity. The country in this part of Iowa mixes CRP, hardwoods, and farmland, which is about as good as whitetail habitat gets.
HUNT DETAILS:
This outfitter hunts nearly seven thousand acres and treats low pressure as the whole game. Between owned, leased, and permission ground there is no shortage of options, so hunters go into fresh country that has not been burned out. The policy is worth noting. The outfitter does not hunt these farms himself, does not reserve the better ground for certain clients, and does not charge more for a particular farm. Everyone is treated the same. Over two hundred fifty tree stands and blinds are hung before hunters arrive, each placed on the basis of deer movement, bedding and feeding areas, and years of scouting, with extras available if a hunter needs to be moved. Trail cameras run year round. Habitat work includes mineral and food plots to keep the herd healthy. The ground itself is corn, soybeans, hay, CRP, hardwoods, and cedar-choked ditches and draws. Transportation to and from stands is furnished.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
The lodge is set up like a home rather than a bunkhouse. There are five fully furnished bedrooms and two full bathrooms, plus a laundry room with a washer, dryer, and half bath. A full kitchen with a five-person island opens onto a dining area and a large main room with couches and recliners, which is where the group ends up each evening. Two gear rooms keep equipment organized and out of the way. Outside there is a covered patio with a grill, and a large heated shop for skinning and processing. All meals are provided, including breakfast, lunch, and hearty home-cooked dinners.
