ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter works western Wyoming, in the country near Yellowstone National Park and Cody, and the species list is about as complete as it gets in the state. Hunters can pursue elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, antelope, mountain goat, black bear, and mountain lion. The operation is not limited to hunting either. Grizzly bear sight-seeing tours, summer pack trips into the high country, and fishing trips are all on offer, which makes it workable for families and for hunters bringing along people who would rather not carry a rifle. Whether the goal is a specific animal or simply time in that part of the state, the outfit is set up to handle both.
HUNT DETAILS:
Two very different elk hunts are available here. One is built around vocal bulls, with archery hunters calling to bugling bulls and rifle hunters working the same ground when bulls are still rutting. Those hunts run from backcountry camps set deep in prime elk habitat, or alternatively from a lodge cabin with day hunts into nearby areas for hunters who want more comfort. The other hunt targets mature bulls after they have moved down to lower elevation wintering grounds, where they gather in bachelor herds and become far more visible. That is the hunt to book for a bull in the three hundred fifty class. Both are guided by people who know elk behavior and how these animals use this terrain, and both put hunters in front of numerous bulls rather than hoping for one. Hunters should come fit and prepared for mountain country either way, since neither hunt is easy.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Two setups are available. The outfitter runs two well-established backcountry camps that put hunters directly into remote, game-rich country, where the hunting starts right outside the tent. Those camps use comfortable wall tents heated by camp stoves, which keeps hunters warm and dry when mountain weather turns, and hearty home-cooked meals are prepared daily. The alternative is a lodge cabin, with hunters day hunting into nearby areas from there. That option trades the immersion of a backcountry camp for a roof, a real bed, and a shorter walk to breakfast. Either way the food and lodging are handled. The choice comes down to comfort.
