ABOUT OUTFITTER:
This HFA-Endorsed Outfitter has been operating since 2005 in the Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park of northern British Columbia. Working inside a protected area is unusual and it matters, since the country sees far less traffic and the game populations reflect that. Stone sheep, Canada moose, mountain goat, and elk are the species available, which is a rare combination to find under one operation. British Columbia holds more than half of the mountain goats in North America, an estimated fifty to sixty thousand, compared with ten to twenty-five thousand in Alaska and smaller numbers elsewhere. That standing makes the province one of the strongest destinations on the continent for a mature billy, and this outfitter hunts in that country.
HUNT DETAILS:
This outfitter hunts one of the top trophy-producing areas on the East Slope of British Columbia, country known for billies carrying heavy bases and good length. The ecosystem supports a healthy, stable population of mature goats, and because only a limited number of hunters go out each season, that quality holds up year to year. Access is by horse or jet boat, followed by hiking into the high country on foot, and the terrain from there is steep and broken enough that good physical condition is not optional. Hunters can expect to see goats every day, with some days turning up more than ten, which is unusual even in strong goat habitat and means real opportunity to be selective. The target is a mature billy with horns of eight inches or better and the mass to match. Hunts run eight full hunting days across a ten day trip. A thirty caliber rifle or larger is recommended.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging depends on which area a hunter is assigned to. Some hunts run out of a cabin, others out of a wall tent, and others from a two-man tent stocked with freeze-dried food for the full length of the hunt. Each setup is put together with the specific country in mind, and the outfitter has camp ready before hunters arrive so nothing has to be sorted out on the ground. One practical note on travel. Flights into this part of the province can be unreliable, so the outfitter often recommends renting a vehicle and driving in, which can take several hours each way but is more dependable.
