This Montana outfitter is a family owned operation located just North of Yellowstone National Park. Their family homesteaded in Jardine in 1932, and have been offering guided hunts for too long to remember! For some of their hunts, and depending on the location of the game, you leave right from their home place and wind up the mountains through aspen groves, in and out of pine forests, over small creeks and through open meadows with vistas into Yellowstone National Park. It is rare to see other horses or people and the rides will be some you will remember.
This is a draw tag unit and hunt, and one must obtain a permit through the annual application process and draw. Montana Hunting District 385, situated primarily in the southwestern part of the state, offers a unique opportunity for bison hunting. The area encompasses a diverse range of landscapes, including mountainous terrain, valleys, forests, and grasslands. The district may include portions of national forests, wildlife management areas, and private land. The rugged terrain can present both challenges and opportunities for hunters.
Bison populations in Montana, including those within District 385, are carefully managed to ensure sustainability and conservation. The number of bison tags issued for hunting in this district is typically limited, and hunters must apply for permits through a lottery system or other designated process.
The hunting season for bison in District 385 is determined by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) and may vary from year to year. Typically, the season coincides with specific dates set by FWP to manage wildlife populations effectively and ensure sustainable hunting practices.
On this hunt, most of your time hunting will be accessed on foot, horseback or vehicle. They will leave early in the morning and will generally come back at noon to have lunch and a break. They will be back hunting in the evening around 3pm or 4pm as it starts to cool off. They will retrieve game by horse/mule or vehicle. It is up to you to pay for game processing or taxidermy. They can drop off your animal at a local processor/taxidermist if needed. They will provide prepared three meals per day and snacks.
For their lodge-based hunts, the price includes 3 meals per day and lodging in a cabin on their home place, where they can start hunting right out the back door.
For backcountry hunts, the price includes one day riding in and out of their backcountry camp, and 5 days of hunting by horse. While staying with them, you will eat hearty cooked meals and sleep in traditional wall tents.
A note about their accommodations: Though your accommodations will be warm, and food will be good, they are a small family outfit without a lot of luxuries. Their sleeping accommodations are basic and include a space with a large bunk-room and a smaller room with two beds. There is an attached bathroom, shower and kitchen for all guests to share. Their beds are all twin beds or cots with foam pads. You may be sharing this space with other hunters depending on how many hunts are booked at the same time as your hunt. If this is a concern, please let us know and we can communicate with the outfitter. On Bison hunts this usually isn't the case though.
