Oregon

(Note: This overview was extracted from the December 2007 issue of The Huntin' Fool)

To apply in Oregon, you must submit a paper application via fax or through the mail. Credit cards may be used and regardless if you send a check or use a credit card, the tag fees are not to be paid up front! Applicants need only submit the non-refundable hunting license fee and the $4.50 application fee per species applied for.

Oregon has a modified preference point system where 75% of the draw tags for deer, elk, and antelope are drawn among the applicants with the most preference points. The remaining 25% of the deer, elk, and antelope tags are issued through a random draw. There are no preference points awarded for sheep applicants.

Oregon has a huge variety of big game animals which include: California Bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep, Roosevelt elk, Rocky Mountain elk, Whitetail deer, Columbia Blacktail deer, Columbia Whitetail deer, Mule deer, and antelope! With such an incredible amount of varying habitat available and a wide variety of species that inhabit Oregon, it is our opinion that the game department does a less than terrible job at managing all big game with the exception of the sheep program.

There is very little trophy hunting opportunity in Oregon, however, they do offer a few rare species that make it a state to consider when applying. Columbia Whitetail deer are a species that are not offered anywhere else! Oregon has plenty of Columbia Whitetails in a relatively small area that consists of two units that they issue permits for. They do have some quality Blacktails and Roosevelts if you can find an area with limited hunting such as private land. Oregon has been a state managed for quantity and not quality. They issue a lot of over-the-counter tags as well as a large number of tags in the draw. It does offer opportunity for those who just want to go hunting. Their elk numbers in some areas are nothing short of incredible with thousands of elk available.

We believe in building points in Oregon as things can change or you may want that hard to obtain species they offer. For less than a $100 investment, you can insure that someday you will be able to choose your unit, apply!
