Kansas

(Note: This overview was extracted from the December 2007 issue of The Huntin' Fool)

Kansas has Mule deer, Whitetail deer, antelope, and elk. Non-residents are limited to applying for Mule deer hunts with a muzzleloader and Whitetail hunts.

Kansas has an online application process, although you must still front the tag fees. They have a true preference point system whereas hunters who apply with the most points will draw the permits. It only takes 1-3 points to draw the best Mule deer units and most Whitetail hunts take 0 points to draw!

New for 2008, Kansas is doing away with landowner deer tags. They have devised a way to reallocate the tags in the regular drawing. Drawing odds should get even better! The downside is obviously that you will not be able to book a hunt with a guaranteed tag.

There are a few great Mule deer bucks in Kansas, but they seem to be harder and harder to come by. Most of the best bucks harvested are taken by locals on private land. Unless you are privy to some insider information, there are better Mule deer states out there for a non-resident.

For hunters who are willing to work and get aggressive, Kansas is your state for a giant Whitetail! Great bucks exist in most units; private ranches having limited hunting pressure produce the best bucks. The archery season has the best dates and is when the best bucks are taken. There is no question that Whitetail fanatics who are willing to travel outside of their home state are either hunting Kansas or trying to find a great ranch to hunt on elsewhere.

There are some “walk in” areas available where private land hunting access has been purchased for the general public to hunt on. Some of these areas go unnoticed and offer giant trophy potential. The game department publishes a booklet containing a list and description of the “walk in” areas that are available. This program purchases trespass privileges for hunters which costs nothing out of your own pocket! For an opportunity at a 160 plus Whitetail, Kansas may just be your best bet!
